HOW THE TRUST WORKS

EMFANZ assists non profit and voluntary community service groups and other organizations performing public services with valuable educational media that they may not otherwise be able to arrange or afford.

EMFANZ also initiates its own projects where it sees a need in the community for information, education and or support. EMFANZ can also assist groups with raising funding via grants and sponsorship for projects that they would otherwise be unable to afford.

With the proliferation of DVD quality video, the advent of HD Television and slick internet websites, the credibility of an organization is often judged by the quality of its internet presence or educational, training or promotional media. Regrettably as the technology and complexity of electronic media improves, the production costs expand. This puts many community groups at a disadvantage because they often cannot afford to produce training, educational, promotional and / or support media of commercial / professional quality.

EMFANZ seeks to balance that disadvantage by helping to put innovative, professional quality educational / promotional media within reach of all community service groups who can use such media to achieve their goals and support their missions.

In particular EMFANZ specializes in video, DVD, A/V, multimedia and internet project development. For instance, the Foundation has produced community service websites like www.childsafenz.org , educational video programmes such as “Living with H.I.V.” (for the NZ AIDS Foundation) and “What Will Happen If I Tell?” an educational programme for the (non offending) parents / caregivers of sexually abused children which consists of an internet website, two video programmes and a CDROM.

DEED OF TRUST

The Deed of Trust of the Electronic Media Foundation Aotearoa New Zealand Charitable Trust is on file at the Companies Office and the Charities Commission where EMFANZ is a registered Charitable Trust. The EMFANZ Deed of Trust document is a standard non profit group trust deed with appropriate “winding up” provisions as approved by the IRD for such groups. Where it mainly differs from other standard deeds of the same type is in Clause 03: “The Aims of The Trust” which states:-

The Board is established to carry out within New Zealand the following aims:-

3.1  To raise the awareness of community workers and community service groups to the potential of educational and information Electronic Media.

3.2  To promote, coordinate, produce or otherwise facilitate educational, training and information projects for the benefit of the community, in particular, video, audio / visual and multimedia information resources in the fields of health, welfare and community empowerment.

3.3 To promote the creation and maintaining of a central database for this material and related community service media information and educational resources that are currently held separately by community groups, trusts, government departments and tertiary education institutions, etcetera, so that all New Zealanders may have access to this resource via a single Internet based library resource.

3.4 To establish and maintain an Internet web server specifically for the purpose of hosting the Internet presence of voluntary and community service groups and to aid the Trust in the dissemination of information on health, welfare, education, arts and community empowerment.

3.5 To participate and co-operate with other parties in the establishment of publicly available electronic multimedia centres integrating the use of Electronic Media in the development of a knowledge based society with emphasis on health, welfare, education, arts and community empowerment.

3.6 To facilitate the expansion of the work of the Trust within New Zealand

3.7 To establish and maintain connections and co-operate with organizations in New Zealand and overseas that the Trustees determine to be advantageous to the Trust and its mission.

3.8 To undertake any lawful act that advances the above charitable aims.

The Electronic Media Foundation Aotearoa New Zealand Charitable Trust is a Charities Commission registered (CC37241) not for profit community service organization administered by a board of trustees.

THE TRUST &

THE TRUSTEES

The Electronic Media Foundation was formed in 1995 as the ‘Education Foundation Aotearoa’. The Foundation changed its name to EMFANZ two years later in 1997. The renamed Trust was registered at the Charities Commission under the new Charitable Trust  provisions instituted by the Government in 2008.

The founding members were a group of friends and associates - professionals in the fields of psychology, visual communications, education, internet development and video / film production.

Their initiative was in response to the lack of modern, effective educational and support media in many key areas of community need, AND the lack of a central resource facility for countless educational, training and support videos and other important information resources that are held separately by community groups, trusts, government and tertiary education departments, etcetera, nationally. A great deal of this material is held without the knowledge of many people and groups who are disadvantaged by a lack of access to it - a situation that adds to the burden on our social welfare system. It is a goal of the Trustees to build a central database and library for this valuable resource so that everyone may have easy access to it.

The Board of Trustees has a maximum of seven members who are from time to time appointed by the existing members as necessary. All Board members have strengths and experience that further the aims of the Trust.

Occasionally we run into vendors /  service providers that we would like to recommend — or recommend against! (see also on our FACEBOOK Page, NOTES section.)

JDI, Computer component supplier of Parnell, supplied a router to the Foundation that was faulty out of the box. None of the remedies suggested by JDI (who would initially not accept the return of the faulty unit) worked. By the time it was “proven” to JDI that the unit was indeed faulty, the warranty had expired so they declined to take it back. The cost of this fiasco to both JDI and the Foundation exceeds the original cost of the router.
